Mrs Raewyn Harris - Napier artist

We were very lucky to have Mrs Raewyn Harris work with us last Thursday. Mrs Harris has retired from full time teaching and is now tutoring art in schools as well as pursuing her own art.

She taught us about planning our artworks before we start and  to only use a few colours.

The artworks were inspired by our trip to the Rocky shore and our visit to Moteo marae.

Can you see where this view is from?
Did you know that some artists like working in groups of three?

We have all done some writing to go with our trips.

Georgia and Simone are very focused on their artworks!

Moteo Marae visit

Moteo Marae

We had a wonderful visit to Moteo marae. For some of us it was the first time that we had the privilege of being welcomed on to a marae. It was a very special experience.

Here are some more images and video of our Moteo marae experience

Habitat

The Rocky shore habitat

In the Middle school we are exploring what a habitat is. We are looking at the specific habitat of the Rocky shore and seeing what specific needs the creatures that live there are.

We will then explore other creatures and see what their habitat is and what features they have in order for them to live there.

Come along and help out!

Rocky shore trip a great success!

We had a great time at the Rocky shore! It was really helpful to have Carli and Jackie there to give us some advice and guidance. They work and teach at the National Aquarium of New Zealand.

They were great at reminding us that this is where lots of creatures live and we need to be respectful of their habitat.

This sign is great to have when we don't have Jackie and Carli there to help us!

Carli and Jackie had lots of great advice and reminders for us

They know a lot about the Rocky shore!

We made sure our hands were dripping with salty water to protect the creature's skin

We wondered how some creatures managed to hold on to the rocks!

We made sure the rocks we were lifting were not too big!

If we needed help - Carli was there in a flash!

We were very careful as we moved around the rocks.

It was great to have lots of  whanau there to support our learning.

Back at school we've been writing some memories about our time there. Here are a few examples....

Remember when....

Remember that time when we saw that HUGE crab in the rocks?
It looked bumpy, scary and rough.
That was the rocky shore.

Remember that time when we smelt the salty water? It was very strong, unusual and annoying.
That was the rocky shore.

Remember that time when we heard seagulls, waves splashing and people crying because they fell over on a rock?
That was the rocky shore.

Rocky Shore visit by Cael in Room 7

Yesterday Room 7 and 10 went to the rocky shore. We went down to the rocks and we found a tiny crab. It was black. I saw  a black and brown cushion starfish. It was stuck to the rock. I like the rocky shore because crabs live there.

Fletcher Keats - Room 6

Yesterday, Wednesday, we went on a trip to the rocky shore. I found a shrimp, it was grey with black eyes and it had a long antennae. I also saw cushion stars with orange and black polka dots. It felt rough on the orange side. It was slimy on the other side. It moved very slowly on the stones under the water.

Starfish

 Room 8

We were all down at the rocky shore. "I found a starfish," I said. It was on a black, wet rock. It looked so much like a star. it felt bumpy and rough, it was quite stiff too. I know that starfish have feelers that they work on. They do not zoom, they are slow like an old man. They usually stick to the rocks. Starfish come in all colours. I love starfish.

 Remember when...

Remember when I saw millions of starfish, especially cushion stars? That was the rocky shore!

The crab

Remember when we saw a hermit crab for the first time? We held it carefully.
That was the rocky shore.

Remember when we looked at it and we saw green, gooey stuff growing on it?
That was the rocky shore.

Remember when it scuttled across your hand and it tickled?
That was the rocky shore.

Remember when we all sat down and ate our yummy morning tea?
That was the rocky shore!

At the Rocky shore

At the rocky shore I found a starfish. It was black and also green too. You have to wet your hands first because you can burn their skin.
