Matariki is coming

Room 6 had the privilege of having a 'visiting author' (Mr Howes from Room 8) come to our class to inspire us with our writing. He shared his poem Matariki is Coming and taught us how to write our own.
Here are a few examples below....enjoy!

MATARIKI IS COMING, By Rhys

Remember that time when we drove to Moteo Marae?
We learnt how to play knuckle bones.
Matariki is coming.

Remember that time when we went to Mitre 10 tough kids 2015?
We got soaking wet.
Matariki is coming.

Remember that time when we drove to the rocky shore?
We learnt how to put a star fish back in the water.
Matariki is coming.

Remember that time when we ate our lunch on the middle playground?
Mrs Stephens took a few pictures.
Matariki is coming.

Remember that time when we played ball tag?
We had rules.
Matariki is here.

Remember that time when we went to the aquarium?
I went with my mum.

Remember that time when we went to the rocky shore?
It was full of huge rocks.

Remember that time when we coloured in the big tree?
It was fun.
Matariki is coming.

Remember that time when we coloured the poppies?
I made one that Mrs Pacheco liked.
Matariki is coming.

Remember that time when we were making the masks?
Matariki is coming.

Remember when we were waiting outside for Matariki?
Matariki is here.

Matariki 2015

The Matariki evening was a great success. It was encouraging to see such a variety of activities happening all over the school. It seemed to truly reflect the spirit of Matariki - a celebration of the year past, learning new things and enjoying each others company.

Click on the links to listen and view two stories about Matariki.

The Matariki lanterns-always a source of celebration and excitement!

Lots of concentration required!

Nothing like a fire to keep you warm!

Thoughtful reflections...

Great full attention...

The National Aquarium of New Zealand visit!

We had a great time last Thursday. We were greeted by Carol Larsen and her team in the meeting room downstairs. She told us the expectations for the morning and how we would go off in our groups with Carly, Tara, Jake or herself.

The first thing we did was to observe the penguins being fed! it was cool to see one of them dive into the water and eat its food. It was sad to hear that the penguins had been badly damaged because of dogs, rubbish or people being careless...

We thought it was great because not only did we get to make fossils with Carly, find fossils in the rocks with Tara and listen to Jake about fossils in the dinosaur room - we got to have a tour of the aquarium with Carol! We enjoyed seeing the creatures that we studied last term at the rocky shore.

Take a look at our photos from the visit and enjoy the captions!

Wow! Look at those penguins!

I hope you've been brushing your teeth!

Look out behind you......

Fossils, fossils and more fossils!

It was great to have lots of parents there to help us.

You have to follow the instructions carefully

Monie likes the idea of being a Paleontologist.

Jake has so much knowledge about dinosaur fossils
