ANZAC Day

This week the Middle School have been learning about ANZAC day in memory of the fallen soldiers. It has been inspiring to foster student agency, where the children loved the opportunity to choose what activity they wanted to be apart of. The activities included digital technologies, poppy creations, crosses, medallions and baking of Anzac biscuits. There was great excitement, laughter and creative learning from these shared experiences and the children couldn't wait to share their learning with their teachers, peers and whanau! Tino pai tamariki. Here are a few snapshots from Ruma Waru....

Nothing like a 'dabb' move to show our respect to the fallen soldiers.

Writers Group visits the MTG

A small group of writers went to the MTG and had a look at the ANZAC exhibition. We had a look at the things on display there that were actually used in the war. We made a poppy to commemorate the people who were killed or badly injured.

We did some writing afterwards which we will publish here. Most of us felt very sad for those who were involved.

On ANZAC day you can go to the MTG for free to visit the exhibition.
There were a lot of objects on display

We all made a poppy each to commemorate the people that died or were injured in the war
Medical staff worked hard to look after the sick, wounded and dying

We wrote about our experience of the exhibition afterwards in a nice, quiet space

Reflection - Sophie

Oh my! I did not know about all of this stuff about ANZAC day. Do you know that the women died in the world war 1? They were nurses. That must have been shocking for their relations. I wonder how many people go to war every year...I can't believe that 16 year olds were in the war.
People used to use those cricket bombs and wear a face mask to protect them from the gas.

Lest we forget.

ANZAC poem

Poppies all around, as red as cherry gloss, as gentle as a rose and can never get lost.

The banging and shooting all around the world. The soldiers standing nice and straight and not a muscle moved!

The horses neighing, nurses screaming, running in the mud - definitely not having fun!

On the battlefield we stand - holding our pride.

The war is over.

Crying when people not returning
People saying goodbye

Poppies

Poppies are red
Poppies are special
Poppy petals are the thing that you're looking for
If you see a poppy, take it home and get
a little
happy

Saffron's poem about ANZAC day

Ash, smoke everyone fights - it's time
for a war over by Gallipoli
Poppy's worn and then...
BOOM! CRASH! SMASHIDY SMASH! as
Gallipoli is in danger!

Men march on April 25th
Broken hearts
Nurses everywhere

Lest we forget

We will remember them

Kymani writes...

It was very kind of the men that enrolled for world war one but sad too because some died. Some men died a painful death and painful if they had a family. When some people heard the news that one of their loved ones had died it would have been sad, painful and scary.

War is sad.

I know it was to save the country, but still, why? Why did there have to be war?

Lest we forget
