Over the last few weeks, the Middle School have been talking about money and discussing spending and saving and profit and loss. The children have been collecting Bledisloe Dollars all year and PREP(Primary Enterprise Programme) is a vehicle to practise both buying and selling.
Everyone was put into groups and worked together to plan and make a product that others would want to buy at the Market Day. We discussed quality and had a very busy and enjoyable day making our products. What a lot of great focus, enthusiasm and hard work went into it.
Some of the products were glitter bottles, glow-in-the-dark jellyfish, pet rocks, pompom pets, decorated pencil tins, foaming bottle monsters, pinecone pets, fancy diaries, paper creations and many more.
Last Friday we had our Market Day, when the different enterprises displayed and sold their creations.The Senior school came and bought our products too, which created a lot of excitement and even some nervousness among the Middle School children!
After a busy half hour, we packed up and returned to our classes to count our money and see if we had made a profit or a loss. It was a great opportunity to participate in some excellent maths thinking.
1. What is the most efficient way to organise and then count the money????
2. How do you work out a profit if your group has to take off the startup fee of $200 Bleds????
3. How do you then split the profit fairly between the group????
